South Yorkshire Future Trams Limited (SYFTL) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA), entrusted with operating and maintaining the South Yorkshire Supertram network.

About SYTFL

SYFTL will play a central role in delivering the region’s ambitions for a modern, high quality light rail system that supports a thriving and connected South Yorkshire.

The South Yorkshire Supertram network has been integral to Sheffield’s identity and connectivity since its opening in 1994. In 2018, it achieved national recognition as the UK’s first tram train operation, extending into Rotherham using pioneering technology that enables vehicles to run across both tram and rail infrastructure.

For the first three decades of its life, the Supertram network was operated under a concession contract held by Stagecoach Group. In 2024, under the leadership of Mayor Oliver Coppard, we took the network back into public control. Through SYFTL, we now employ a 350-strong workforce who deliver around 9 million passenger journeys annually.

As we move into this exciting new era for the tram network in South Yorkshire, it is essential that SYFTL is in a place to deliver a safe, dependable and customer focused operation.
