Key Responsibilities
Board Leadership and Governance:
Lead the Board, ensuring accountable, effective and collaborative operation in accordance with its statutory and constitutional responsibilities, working closely with SYMCA as appointing body
Ensure high standards of governance, performance, risk management and compliance are maintained at all times – regularly assessing and strengthening performance, culture and ways of working
Agree Board agendas with the Managing Director and ensure meetings are efficient, focused and decision driven
Facilitate constructive challenge and support within the Board, drawing on the expertise of non executive and SYFTL senior management, fostering inclusion and ensuring all members are actively engaged and empowered to contribute
Call meetings of the Board when required to address urgent or strategically significant matters
Understand the Mayor's strategic vision for public transport in South Yorkshire and ensure SYFTL plays a key role in its delivery
Strategic Leadership
Lead the Board in setting, reviewing and monitoring the organisation’s strategy for future tram and mass transit development in South Yorkshire
Ensure that strategic plans align with regional transport priorities, wider economic and environmental objectives and national policy frameworks
Oversee major investment, infrastructure and delivery programmes, ensuring value for money and benefits realisation
Maintain a strategic understanding of SYFTL’s operations, culture and performance to ensure the Board has meaningful insight into the organisation and its leadership
Stakeholder and Partnership Engagement
Act as an ambassador and advocate for SYFTL at local, regional and national levels
Build strong, trusting relationships with partner authorities, funders, government departments, regulators and key delivery partners
Represent the organisation at high level meetings, negotiations and public events where required
Supporting the SYFTL Leadership
Act as a sounding board, mentor and constructive partner to SYFTL Managing Director
Ensure SYFTL leaders are well-informed, with access to the quality, clarity and depth of information they need to exercise sound judgement
Ensure the Board holds the leadership team to account while supporting them to operate effectively
Partner with the Managing Director to ensure SYFTL maintains a compelling vision, mission and strategic direction, keeping the Board focused on delivering these ambitions
Public Value and Reputation
Ensure the organisation operates in the best interests of South Yorkshire’s communities, passengers and stakeholders
Champion equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility in service design
Uphold and protect the reputation and credibility of the organisation through visible and effective leadership
